Even after his death, Brown's legend lives on. Brown popularized the idea of militant insurrections and drove a wedge between Americans who called for abolition and those who called for appeasement with slaveholders. What is undeniable, however, is that John Brown talked the talk and walked the walk. Malcolm X once said you could use the public opinion of John Brown as a sort of test: "If a white man wants to be your ally, what does he think of John Brown?"
